Adult Patients
Before the dressing change:
If the dressing is to be changed in the patient's home, advise them to:
- Find a quiet, private room and make sure it is warm and comfortable
- Take any prescribed painkillers an hour or two before the dressing change is due or as prescribed
- Turn off mobile phones to prevent interruptions, which can prolong the procedure
- Arrange a signal to let you know when they need to take a break
During the dressing change:
- Offer the patient ways in which they can be more involved
- Suggest distraction techniques and relaxation exercises
Between dressing changes, advise them to look after the wound and delicate skin by:
- Showering rather than bathing (shower proof dressings may be useful)
- Using any recommended emollients very carefully around new skin
- Make sure they keep the wound protected from sun or wind
