Change to Default Stylesheet

Adult Patients

Before the dressing change:

If the dressing is to be changed in the patient's home, advise them to:

  • Find a quiet, private room and make sure it is warm and comfortable
  • Take any prescribed painkillers an hour or two before the dressing change is due or as prescribed
  • Turn off mobile phones to prevent interruptions, which can prolong the procedure
  • Arrange a signal to let you know when they need to take a break

During the dressing change:

  • Offer the patient ways in which they can be more involved
  • Suggest distraction techniques and relaxation exercises

Between dressing changes, advise them to look after the wound and delicate skin by:

  • Showering rather than bathing (shower proof dressings may be useful)
  • Using any recommended emollients very carefully around new skin
  • Make sure they keep the wound protected from sun or wind
