Helping Your Child
The exact sort of help a child needs will depend on how old they are, but some general principles apply.
As appropriate for the child's age:
- Be on hand to comfort him or her during the dressing change
- If it is to be done at home, choose a quiet, warm room
- Explain, in their language, what is going to happen, how long it will take and whether it is likely to hurt (be honest!)
- Try to put him or her at ease - for a young child perhaps by applying a dressing to a favourite doll or teddy bear
- Help distract his or her attention with toys, books, games, blowing bubbles etc.
- Ask the nurse if you can help with the dressing change if you think it will make your child more comfortable
- If your child wants to be involved, ask your nurse to involve him or her in the procedure
- Consider giving your child a reward for being brave
- Don't be shy to ask for additional pain relief if you think it's needed
